Florence-August 2: Settling In

We arrived safely in Italy after a long trip on Aer Lingus. One of the things we noticed this year is that on the long haul flights, only soft drinks are free and on the short haul flights, even coffee costs 2 euro. The flight from Dublin to Bologna was an Aer Lingus.com flight which is their attempt to compete with Ryan Air.

We are staying at the Il Villino. The main part of the hotel is a beautifully restored ancient Florentine house and is a ten minute walk to the Duomo which we can see from our room. After a three hour nap, we visited the Bapistery of San Giovanni which was built in the 11th century and is the oldest building in the square. It has reproductions of the original three sets of bronze doors designed by Ghiberti in the 1400's.

Dinner was at Trattoria Accadi, a pretty little restaurant with checked tablecloths and candles. After dinner we headed for the square that is home to the Piazza della Signoria where people were admiring a copy of the statue of David, listening to live music, watching a mime entertain the crowd, or just strolling with gelati and admiring the ambiance of Florence.
