Heading Off For Copenhagen

It's always hard to leave such an interesting place, but today we left Goteborg, Sweden to fly to Copenhagen. Since our plane didn't leave until 3:00, we had some time to walk around town. It's fun to watch a town getting ready for a festival or Market Day and today they seemed to be setting up for some sort of international market. A bright red truck that said British Fudge had claimed its spot as did another truck labeled Dutch Delicious with a Dutch design on it of a boy and girl in wooden shoes.  Across the square, pots of flowers were lined up and customers were already there checking them out.

I pictured the Goteborg airport as a small airport with perhaps a coffee stand or magazine shop, but it turned out to be one of the nicest airports we have ever been in. It was bright, modern, and had wonderful stores with quality items. Even if you only window shop, it's a fun way to pass the time. Not only that, the restaurants all had a theme and the food was fresh and wholesome. We were interviewed at the gate  briefly about our experience in the airport and it was a good thing we were. "Just so you know," she said pointing to a board after an announcement in Swedish only was made, "they have moved your gate."  I turned around just in time to see the last person from the waiting area disappear down the escalator. We grabbed our bags and took off after them.

For the first time ever, I was not really sure what airline we were on. It only cost $50 for two, not unusual at all here, but I recalled our flight was affiliated with SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) and thought it was named Funjet.  We boarded a bus and rode across the field hoping it would stop at one of the sleek SAS jets or the colorful jets with the smile on the tail, but instead it pulled up to a small SAS prop jet with propellers. It was pretty small, but the flight was smooth. Out the window we passed forests, lakes dotted with islands, and small villages with red tiled roofs.

Our flight was so quick, the cabin crew only had time to offer each person a mint wrapped in green cellophane and no time for the free soft drinks the pilot said would be served probably as an apology for the plane being late.  We collected our luggage and took a swift modern metro to downtown Copenhagen. Our hotel is right on the harbor with tall sailing ships in front of it.

Copenhagen is a city under construction right now. Scaffolding is everywhere, but this is not always a bad thing. It often means restoration is in progress. I remembered an affordable restaurant where we ate upstairs overlooking a fountain. The city has a summer vibe. It's almost 11:00 yet people are laughing and enjoying sitting out by the water. We are excited to be back and look forward to exploring the town tomorrow.

I marvel at how inexpensive airfare is in Europe -- I am heading to Philly on Thursday and the airfare is outrageous! I love how all of your sites have been on the water. Is the weather warm there?
